How Much is Too Much?
I have a sweet tooth. I drink about seven cups of tea a day, with two teaspoons of brown sugar. I am an active road runner and go to the gym twice a week as well. Is 14-16 teaspoons of sugar a day healthy for me? (I am 44 years old.)
Thanks
Paul
Answer:
Dear Paul,
Thank you for your email regarding the use of sugar in your diet.
All healthy diets can include sugar. Nutrition and taste goes hand in hand. Sugar adds taste to food and can be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
Sugar on its own is not a determining factor to the quality of your diet. Balanced and healthy eating habits are those which include a variety of foods, especially vegetables and fruit everyday.
I've attached information on healthy eating released by the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Health, for your use.
I would also advise you to consult with a registered dietician, who, after careful assessment of your dietary habits and lifestyle, will draw up an individual and healthy meal plan suited to meet your specific needs. Please let me know which area you are from and I will refer you to a registered dietician closest to you.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any information on sugar, nutrition and health.
